If there is one way of saving the pennies it will be travelling as the locals do. You may need to have a lot of time, a lot of patience and a lot of mental stamina! Travelling around South America for example, is best done by the local buses as they are extremely good value for money (internal flights are notoriously expensive). 50+ hour bus journeys are the norm so either take a good book or try and knock yourself out! In Bolivia and Peru for example you will also have to put up with the local 'soapboxers' screaming down the bus for hours on end in Spanish all through the night! When you get down to roots level in villages, towns and even cities you should be able to barter and get the price down. In Asia specifically you will be bombarded the whole time by people wanting to take you places. Just remember that you are in control and you should be able to knock them down between 10-20%.
