Air Passes

Most airlines have their own country-wide air pass on offer - some include flights to neighboring countries.

Depending on how many flights you are thinking of taking it will be best to check if you can include any on your international ticket.

The Star Alliance round the world ticket is particularly good for this as so many airlines are included (this also includes internal flights in South America which is notorious for it's expensive flights). Most RTW tickets will allow internal flights in Australia and sometimes New Zealand so there a few times when you will actually need to buy an air pass.

Air passes usually mean taking a minimum of two one-way flights. Most are calculated in US dollars so are unlikely to change in price. Passes are normally more useful if you are planning to fly to obscure, small towns or if you are not booked on a round the world ticket. However, ask your travel agent to check the published fares as well as breaking it down into separate flights can sometimes save you money.

You can be quite cunning if travelling to Australia and wish to include internal flights. Some tickets by Qantas or Singapore Airlines will include internal flights. However, there are two air passes available that offer exceptional value:

  • The G'Day Pass (Ansett)

  • The Boomerang Pass (Qantas)

These also require a minimum of two one-way flights and can be combined with a very cheap ticket on another airline to Australia so undercutting the above tickets.
