We have seen in the Bus Pass section the difference between the two passes and that coach passes are undeniably cheaper to buy than the hop-on, hop-off bus passes. However, they offer a completely different service. They are scheduled to depart and arrive at certain times and only stop for refreshments or toilet stops. They also drop you off at the local coach station whereas the bus passes stop at hostels. If you are on a tight budget or know that you just want to visit certain places then these are ideal. The leader in this field is Greyhound and they have an extensive network in Australia and North America. If you are travelling in New Zealand and you do not fancy the backpacker buses you can buy tickets for shuttle buses that link most places in both the North and South Islands. Coach passes are also the most cost effective and efficient way to travel in South America. Tickets can not be bought in advance from abroad but they have regular and cheap tickets linking most places that you would want to travel to. Brazil, Argentina, Chile and Mexico have a very good network. Bolivia and Peru also have a good network but the standard is not as good. Travelling by bus or coach in South East Asia is also very easy but no passes exist as such. (See the local transport section).
