Your Appearance

Your appearance obviously says a lot about you and will effect how others treat you and approach you.

From a safety point of view it is wise to think what you must look like to the locals in lesser developed areas. Try not to draw attention to yourself by carrying your brand new camera in full view or by wearing too much jewelry.

Even though most backpackers do not carry very many valuables around with them compared to the average holiday maker you should still take good care of what you have - that cheap camera contains photos that no amount of money could replace...

This does not mean that you have to walk around like a tramp but in certain areas it may be wise to look like you do not have much to offer a potential thief.

Your attitude also makes a difference to how people approach you. Even though you have absolutely no idea of where you are - walk tall - and feel confident and you will not seem like the person who will fall for any of the tricks played on travellers to get their money off them.
